The 243 Winchester calibre

The 243 Winchester calibre, named after its inventor, is a hunting cartridge introduced in 1955. The 2.045 inch (51.94 mm) long case carries a .243 inch (6.17 mm) bullet with a mass usually between 3.56 grams (55 grains) and 6.94 grams (107 grains). Bullets with a mass of between 5.18 grams (80 grains) and 6.48 grams (100 grains) are usually the most accurate. The 243 Winchester is a small calibre/high ballistic performance cartridge; it is very popular worldwide, especially in the United Kingdom. The various loads offer a cartridge that is suitable for use against varmints such as foxes, small and medium mammals such as deer, and also chamois. It is also outstandingly accurate for sport shooters aiming at targets up to 300 metres away. The 243 Winchester, aka the 243 Win, is also seen as a versatile calibre with moderate recoil and good ballistic performance, making it very popular in the USA, as well as in France where it is sometimes used during walked-up shooting against boar and hinds with good results. In the USA and some other countries, it is specially loaded for use in sniper rifles in law enforcement and by special forces and the armed forces. The 243 is available from Winchester with seven loads to cover all requirements.
