The 308 Winchester calibre

The 308 Winchester calibre is also known as the 7.62x51 mm NATO or "7.62 NATO". It was developed in the 1950s for small-calibre long guns used by NATO countries. The US influenced its uptake by NATO in 1954 for use in assault rifles and medium machine guns. The name "308" comes from the commercial name of the 7.62 ammunition and denotes the bullet diameter in inches, equal to 7.82 mm. The 308 Winchester is fitted with bullets whose masses range from 9.53 grams (147 grains) to 11.66 grams (180 grains) and which have a high velocity of between 2,625 fps and 2,822 fps depending on the bullet weight and barrel length. This ammunition’s excellent ballistic performance, excellent adaptability and reduced recoil that offers a comfortable shot, make it suitable both for target shooting and for hunting mammals. The 308 Winchester is perfectly suited for shots over the 300-metre range against medium-sized mammals such as roe deer or larger game such as stag, boar and elk. It has been authorised as a hunting cartridge in France since the 6th September 2016. Winchester offers seven loads for target shooting and for hunting large game.
